Commencing tomorrow, 19th March, Microsoft will be rolling out Windows 7 Service Pack 1 to all users via automatic Windows Updates. What was once a choice to install when it was released 2 years ago, the update is now mandatory as support for Windows 7 RTM ends on 9th April 2013.

Announcing the move, Microsoft stated that “Starting tomorrow, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) will begin rolling out automatically on Windows Update. Updating customers to Windows 7 SP1 is part of our ongoing effort to ensure continued support and improved security updates for customers who have not yet installed SP1,”

The installation will be fully automated and no action will be needed on the user’s part.

However, exceptions apply as if Windows 7 systems are being managed by Systems Centre Configuration Manager, WSUS, or similar, Windows 7 SP1 will not roll out automatically
